The Beginner’s Guide to Choosing Adult Coloring Books

It’s official—grown-ups everywhere are coloring.

They’re coloring alone, in groups, at home, in coffee shops, at the library, and one or two out there are probably even doing it at work (don’t worry, we won’t tell). There are many reasons why adults of all ages, from college students to senior citizens, are sitting down with a coloring book these days. Coloring can relieve stress, promote relaxation and mental clarity, and inspire creative thinking, just to name a few benefits. Oh—and of course, it’s fun!

Whatever your reason for trying an adult coloring book, we put together this guide to help you get started. With so many different books and supplies out there, it can be overwhelming to know where to begin, especially if the last coloring book you owned featured Super Friends or the original Care Bears.

Here are five of our favorite adult coloring books for all ages and levels of experience.

Color Me Calm: 100 Coloring Templates for Meditation and Relaxation

Not sure what you like to color? This book has a little bit of everything—mandalas, geometric patterns, animals, botanicals, and other designs popular in many adult coloring books. The designs are a healthy mix of simple to more intricate, so you will get a great sense of what you enjoy coloring.

Simple Designs: A Laid Back Coloring Book

Designed specifically for people who find complex, intricate coloring pages the opposite of relaxing! The patterns are simple, but still interesting and fun to color because, let’s face it, you shouldn’t need the eyesight of a peregrine falcon to use a coloring book.

Just Add Color: Geometric Patterns: 30 Original Illustrations To Color, Customize, and Hang

This is our go-to book when we don’t want to worry about coloring intricate patterns and tiny shapes, or staying in the lines. Charming hand drawn designs on perforated pages are easy to remove and hang on the refrigerator.

Mandala: 120 Immersive Beginner Design Patterns for Improved Focus and Stress Relief

If you want to explore the art of mandalas (for less than $6!), this book is the perfect place to start. Added bonus: you can also download a PDF version and only print the pages you want to color.

Creative Haven Floral Design Color by Number Coloring Book

Color-by-numbers, the grown-up edition! All of these coloring pages have color guides to take away the stress of choosing the right color, so you can relax and color the night away. It’s a great way to gain confidence and create beautiful designs.

Now that you have a few ideas to get started, we hope you fall in love with coloring all over again! Have any favorites of your own? Share them with us on the ECR4Kids GelWriter Facebook page!
